Play That Funky Music...

I had my bi-weekly guitar lesson this afternoon. I’ve been playing for decades, but hadn’t progressed much over the past few years, and was feeling a bit stagnant. I started the lessons last May right after I got the Marshall. Vinnie, who runs a local guitar store with his dad, is my instructor.
It has definitely been a worthwhile endeavor and my playing has improved a lot. At least I think so and the wife seems to agree. The earlier lessons were various scales, generic licks, and other practice exercises. With the basics now set, we’re now concentrating on songs.
The lesson for last month was “Blues in C”. As Vinnie ran through the licks, I could generally repeat them back alright, but had trouble with the feel of the music. I started thinking to myself; Gee whiz, maybe I’m too white to play the blues. Metal and hard rock I can feel, but I couldn’t find the groove for the blues. But I kept at it. On the last lesson of that series, Vinnie was playing a slow blues rhythm and I was attempting to play lead on top of it. For a short span, everything suddenly clicked. Vinnie exclaimed “Dude, I thought you were white! That was awesome, man.” I guess there’s hope.
This month we’re working on Joe Satriani’s “Crowd Chant”. It has a lot of variation and cool licks with plenty of bends, which is what makes the lead part so fun to play.
I find the guitar a great way to relax after a long day at work. Grab a beer, sit back, crank up the Marshall (but never above 3 to avoid blowing out windows), and let her rip!
What do you folks do to drive away the day's frustrations?

I usually turn on the tunes and take a hot bath!... it warms up the vocal cords. Sorry no picture! :)
I like to go out and feed the fish in the pond, or go in the backyard and feed the jays. I've also been learning doumbek and djembe, which is a lot of fun. The only thing I can play on guitar is Malaguena, and if I don't keep playing it I forget how. I memorized a blues scale, which lets me improvise (whether on keyboard, harmonica or git-fiddle), which can also be fun.
I used to play online role-playing games to get away from it all, but that was too addicting. :)
When things get stressful, my all-time favorite remedy is to drive somewhere. Anywhere.
Dude!!! Crank it to 11. Worked for Spinal Tap!!
Relaxation? Anything that drowns out the wife and step-daughter......Rum and head phones.
I like to walk around my garden to relieve stress, but I get home around midnight, so I just go to bed instead.
I take my dog to the park (w/o the kids!) and talk to other dog people, play fetch, and walk around looking at birds and stuff.
I play hockey. (Not necessarily that well, but enthusiastically.)
And Shorty beat me to the goes-to-11 joke. Crap.
Malika - sounds very relaxing.
Dave - I had to google search to get the the drums. I remember a few bars of Malaguena. Going for a drive around here is stress inducer!
Shorty - My ears hurt past 3. A Marshall will drown out anything.
Melissa - How big is your garden? I can do a lap around ours in about 10 seconds.
Madwag - Kids. Ya gotta love 'em, but a break from them is always nice.
Bryan - Are you in a league or just casual pickup games?
If I'm feeling particularly stressed, I like to make bread. All of that kneeding is very therapeutic.
Connie - I agree, kneading dough is very therapeutic. However, needing dough is stressful.
PS. regarding guitar lessons -- i had two yrs of lessons at 12 yrs old, haven't progressed an inch since...
sorry, didn't see your hockey question (something all about MEEEE and i missed it!).
i play in a league -- games in Renton, Lynnwood, Everett, and Kirkland.
Ever take any slap shots to the side of the head? Not implying anything, just asking.
You know...Bryan does look kind of like one of the Hanson brothers from "Slapshot".
