Big Goldfish

After fishing for steelhead most of the day, we parked along a shady outer breakwater to relax and goof off for awhile. Annette put a catfish bait on her steelhead pole and tossed it over the side to see if anything would bite. About a half hour later the pole suddenly bent over the edge of the breakwater. A fish had grabbed the bait, went under the breakwater and out the other side. The breakwater is held in place by chains, so we figured the fish would wrap the line around a chain and then break it off. Annette grabbed the pole fought it for while and then passed the pole to her dad. After he got tired of dealing with it, he handed it to me. I managed to finesse the fish out from under the breakwater and out into open water. We eventually landed the fish, weighed it, took some pictures, and then released it. The carp weighed in at 27 pounds. Not too bad for 17 pound test line.

The original purpose of our trip was steelhead and we achieved our first perfect season opener with two field limits (12 keepers). In addition, we caught and released eight wild ones and had seven break off due to weeds, anchor ropes, etc. Yum! Time to buy more planks!

That thing's humungous! Nice job. Doesn't that make you nervous, Michelle, you being a mermaid and all? ;)

That thing looks like a bottom feeder. Was your hook near the bottom?

Dave, The bait was just laying on the bottom. We were hoping for a catfish, but got this guy instead.

We've tried carp once, but they're pretty oily, fishy, and not so tasty. We had to toss the frying pan as the smell would not wash out. Not recommended for eating, but good for fighting.

That fish must have thought that he was a goner. What a relief it must have been that you released him.

I am a bad fisherman. I will put a line in the water, but hope not to catch anything. If I did, I would have to carefully remove the fish from the hook and slide him back into the water.

I can't bring myself to look into the eyes of something I will eat. :)

Sad, I know.
